Happy half birthday baby!

Little Lady,

It's INSANE you've been alive half a year!! What the heck?

People say time flies once you have kids and I'm tellin' ya they ain't lying! I can't believe you're already six months old. I feel like just last week you were born. Now you babble all of the time. Mostly you yell, sing, scream out of excitement and say "dada" and "daddy."
You are a little busy bee. Always watching what we're doing and trying to get involved. You're on my lap as I write this to you right now just watching the words pop up on the screen. From time to time you'll try to mimic me and grab the keyboard but luckily, right now you seem to be content with just watching.

You've been good at sitting up for a few weeks now. You like to play on the floor with your toys. Last night I saw you lunge forward and scoot up on your knees and I thought you were going to start crawling. Good thing you didn't though because I was going to the bathroom and you would have crawled right off the bed. I'm not sure I'm ready for you to start moving yet. I know you are going to be getting into EVERYTHING!

You are beginning to get more independent but you are still preferably social. You'd much rather be in a conversation between your daddy and I than playing off on your own, but if we're not doing much you're happy playing with your toys.
Forever Bliss Photography
You, as I imagined you would, LOVE food. You've tried many different kinds of veggies and you love most of them. You don't like peas, but your daddy and I don't either so we understand. You do like sweet potato and squash.

We went to the doctor today and you are 18.6 pounds now and 27 inches long. 90th percentile for weight and height! Getting your shots were not nearly as bad this time. You only cried for a moment, then I nursed you and sang the alphabet song and you were fine. You LOVE that song. I can sing it any time you're crying and you'll stop and stare at me. Maybe it's because I sang it so much when you were in my belly and during diaper changes when you were small.
We've also started signing with you. Or I have. Your daddy seems to think it's silly. You know what it means when I sign "bath" and you get excited and kick your feet, just like you do when I say it.

I started a project I'm going to give to you when you're older. It's a book I hope to add something to daily this year. I hope I can keep up with it. So far so good!

It has been so fun watching you grow. I'm happy and sad at the same time. I miss you being small but I love the new things you're doing.

Thanks for rocking my world!

Love,

Mommy

She Requested Steak and Potatoes

Motherhood is funny. Just when you think you have a plan set, your child throws you for a loop and it all changes.

I was so paranoid about breastfeeding and pumping enough milk for my daughter while I'm away at work. My pediatrician said at four months old my daughter could start rice cereal, so my goal was to start letting her chow down on her four month birthday.

Then, I started reading some articles and recommendations (from organizations like AAP, and WHO) for babies to wait until they're six months to start solids. My understanding of this is because your baby's stomach is fully developed, less likely to develop allergies and ready for solids sometime between 4-6 months but to be safe (and since all babies develop differently), it's better just to wait until 6 months.

Surprisingly I have been able to keep up with pumping, and my frozen stash hasn't had to take too much of a hit. So at four months I made a goal to continue exclusively breastfeeding until six months. After all, this is recommended, and it was going so well, why change it up? This became my new BIG HUGE breastfeeding goal. I doubted I'd last three months, much less six. But even if I dried up I'd probably have enough frozen to get us through the last few weeks and by George, I was going to do it if it killed me!

Famous last words.

Around four and a half months my daughter started acting funny around food. Others may call it "showing interest." I tried to ignore it.

I ignored her reaching for my bowl of oatmeal every morning, and the fact that she'd lean toward me and open her mouth when a spoon came her direction. But one afternoon, when I wasn't quick enough she grabbed a tater tot off my plate, put it in her mouth and started chewing. In a panic I pulled it out of her mouth and sadly admitted two things. 1. I need to start eating better and 2. She's probably ready for solids.

To be sure I read a few articles about the signs of being ready.
Older than four months- Check
Sitting up unsupported- A little wobbly but- Check
Able to let us know when she's full by turning away from a bottle or unlatching- Check
Loss of tongue-thrust-reflex-based on how she momentarily chowed down on the tater tot I'd have to say- Check
Showing interest in food- Double Check

So I had come to the realization that my daughter is probably ready for solids. But was I ready to give in to her readiness? I was planning to skip rice cereal all together, and had Christmas as her date set to have her first "meal". Oh yes, with squash, pictures, music, it would be a big deal. Plus, breastfeeding was going so well, and I wasn't ready to say she was no longer exclusively breastfed. This was my badge of pride. My "I DID IT" sign I could have in my back pocket the rest of my life, pulling it out on the rare occasion of the awkward question "how long did you breastfeed?" I played out the scenario in my mind. "A year" I'd tell them, and be sure to add in the unnecessary additive "six months exclusively."

I read more in my baby food book about first foods for babies and decided an organic brown rice cereal would be a good choice if we were going to start early. I want to stay gluten-free with her for a year, and brown rice would be a healthy start. Plus I can mix in breast milk and she'd be familiar with the taste.

I found a brand I liked and was ok with trying, and prepared to loose my exclusive breastfeeding virginity.
I thought it would be a little sad but it wasn't in the least. Just like I thought, she was ready. She leaned in and opened wide from the start and surprisingly, more of it made it in her mouth then on her bib. After her first few bites she was ready to chow down; so much so, when it was all over, she licked the bowl.
Of course I got it all on video.
Lil' J loved her yummy rice and milk. The next night she didn't miss one bite and was mad when it was all gone.
I can't wait until Christmas when she can have some REAL food. I already have her bib picked out, but I'm not sure which food it will be. Maybe avocado, sweet potato or squash. I'm leaning towards a vegetable and sticking with different veggies a little while before introducing fruit (besides avocado). I'm still torn between baby-led weaning and pureeing, so I may make a soft finger-food version for her to pick up, and a puree version as well and just see which she prefers. I imagine we'll do a mix of both until she moves all the way to feeding herself.

What was your baby's first food?

After 5 Months With You I'm Ready for 10 More

My Little Journey,

You are growing so beautifully and so smart every day. One of my favorite things about you is how you are so easy to please--Usually. If you are ever just fussy or cranky after you've already eaten I just sing to you and you're fine.

One morning last week I sat on the bed with you and sang to you for about half an hour. I sang just about every primary song I could think of twice, and rocked you back and forth and you just loved it. You watched us in the mirror and didn't make a peep, you just smiled.
Another favorite perk about you is how happy you get when I come home. I didn't think you'd be doing this so soon but you reach out for me. It melts my heart every time. You stick your arms out and lean towards me, or if you're sitting down you'll lift your arms to be picked up.

Every night before bed you and I dance around mommy's room and you laugh and laugh and laugh. I think it's probably your favorite part of the day. Afterward I blow on your tummy and you laugh some more. You are so ticklish now! I got it on camera the other day and I'm so glad because it's something I never want to forget.

You're beginning to sit up by yourself. I feel like I hardly put you down but when I do I'm amazed that you can wiggle your way along the floor, roll from your back and from your tummy, and sit up for a little while--depending if there's something you want to reach for.

You have four different "voices." Your regular voice, where you'll babble and talk. Your cooing voice, which is really high and so sweet, and soft. It makes us laugh because you sound like you're talking to another little baby in your angel voice. Your third voice is loud and gruntish. You aren't mad when you talk in this voice but just very loud. And finally, you have a special voice for when you talk to Snoop. It's kind of a mix between your sweet talking and your grunt talking. At first I thought you were scared of him and starting to whine because he was too close to you, but then I realized you were just trying to communicate, and were reaching closer to pet him.
Now you love to pull on his ears and pet his head. Like your mommy, you love it when he licks your feet.

You still say "dada" so now we walk around the house looking for him and I ask "where's dada?" when we find him I say "there he is!" Then you laugh. You also (by coincidence I'm sure) respond "hi" sometimes when we say hi. It's more of a "Heh" but that counts to us.

You love food. You love smelling it, trying to grab it and put it in your mouth. I've never known a baby your age seeming to want to eat, as much as you seem to. You'll try to grab many things but I can no longer eat with you in my lap because you actually try to eat my food.

Something very pleasant that you've developed this month is the ability to tolerate your car seat. It's like you know we're going someplace fun so you don't cry anymore. Well, not unless we're in the car for longer than 30 minutes, or if we stop for a long period of time. You just look around, play with your toys, talk in the mirror, or fall asleep. I never thought that day would come.

You're also sleeping much better now which is seriously a miracle. I'm worried that's all going to change soon once your teeth start coming through. I haven't noticed any yet but my guess is they're not too far away.

You are so much fun and such a delight. I can't believe in another couple of months you'll probably be crawling around. I just want you to stay tiny forever. Every stage you grow into is my new favorite stage but I still miss the last. You seriously make me want to have ten more babies just like you.

I love being a mommy so much more than I imagined. Thank you for being such a joy.

Love you so much,

Mommy

4 Months and Growing Strong

Dear Baby,

Boy oh boy little girl, you have developed quite a personality! You know what you want when you want it. So much so that you've grown into two new little nicknames: Diva and Drama Queen. You are so happy and cheerful about 90 percent of time time, but the thing is you LOVE being around people and seeing what's going on. So when it's time for you to go to bed you don't want to. Especially if you know we're staying up. So you get overly tired and cry, until we turn off the lights and pretend we're going to bed too. Sometimes I just give in and go to bed early too.
We used to be able to walk around a store with you in your carrier and you'd fall asleep in a short while, now you stay awake no matter how long it takes, and don't fall asleep until we're in the car.

We've started mommy and me yoga and you love the classes. You are the loudest and most talkative in the class. I think you get that from me. You laugh and smile when you see the other babies, and I can tell you just love being around people.

You've started to grab things. It seems to have happened overnight. It seemed like one day I was telling your daddy we should shake rattles in front of you so you could reach for them, and the next day you were picking things off my plate, trying to put it in your mouth, tossing things off the couch near you, and everything else. You also found your feet and it's the CUTEST thing when you curl up and grab your toes. You haven't put them in your mouth yet--Not on your own at least. I put them in your mouth once to help you. It looked like that was what you wanted. But we haven't done that again since.

I also saw you sucking your thumb today which was so cute.

You don't hate your car seat as much as you used to. If I sing the ABCs to you, you stop crying. That works about 50 percent of the time. You seem to really like my singing, so we do that a lot.

You reached out and pet Snoop this week. I think he appreciated that. I think one day you two will be best friends.

You and your daddy have been enjoying your quality time together. He's doing a good job with you and I miss you two so much when I'm at work. I call home and can hear you laughing in the background and it makes me so sad that I'm missing those moments. Someday it won't be that way. It's nice now though because your daddy helps out SO MUCH. Of course all day while I'm at work, then he gets a break when I get home, then at night before bed be gives me a little break and tries to get you to go to sleep (that's what he's doing right now but you're being a bit stubborn).

Your pediatrician says we can start some solids now, and I was thinking if giving you some rice cereal or oatmeal for your four month birthday today but I didn't get around to it. I'm debating waiting until six months but I'm just so excited to see what you think! You also seem so ready to try. We'll see. Maybe we'll wait another month or so.

You still love mama's milk. Or just mama. Sometimes I'll get home and even though you JUST ATE, you'll want to nurse anyway. It's kind of funny to me but you're sporting those rolls really well so I don't mind. We're still doing well with breastfeeding. WAY better than I thought we'd do. Your Daddy just wishes he had boobs so he could calm you as easily as I can.
This month we started using cloth diapers. There was quiet an adjustment period. I don't think you liked them at first. But now you don't seem to know the difference. In fact, I'd hope you like them a little better since it's softer. You look awfully cute in them, that's for sure! I can't believe we all are actually using and enjoying them. I think we'll stick with it for awhile.

You were the most adorable baby on Halloween. I made part of your Ladybug costume then I found an adorable cowgirl costume I had to get too. I figured it would me more comfortable than the ladybug one on Halloween. So Saturday you were a ladybug and Sunday you were a cowgirl, and we went around the block with your friend dressed up as a cow!
You, your dad and I watched fireworks afterwards. Your first fireworks show! I think you liked it.

Now I can't wait for Christmas. I can't believe it's next month. I said time and time again I wouldn't be one of "those moms" who buys their kids toys they don't need but I'm already thinking about Christmas gifts for you. Of course they'll all be educational *wink*.

These last four months have been the most exciting four months of my life, and every day you're doing something new that just makes me so excited. I can't blink or I'll miss something!

You've been such a treat to have in my life and we're so blessed to have you! I can tell you are just going to be the funniest kid when you get older because you just have a ridiculous amount of personality already. But then again, I think I knew that from the moment I saw you and you lifted your little head up to look at me as if you were saying "So THERE you are!"

Thanks for being the best. Keep it up!

I love you!

Love,

Mommy

It's Been a Fun Two Months

My Beautiful Daughter,

You're only two months old but already, I'm beginning to feel like you've been in my life forever. My favorite part of the day is when you're in a good mood and smiling. You talk baby talk a lot now too. You especially like to show me how much you can say when I'm on the phone. We've also heard you say "Dada" quite a few times, mostly when you've had enough fun in your swing.

You also know when I'm coming to get you now because you'll fuss a little, but stop once you see me and start smiling and kicking your feet. It's so cute. I can't believe how smart you are!

You've been on three big trips already, and seven flights! That's more than some adults have been on.

Grandma introduced you to Elmo and you love him. I'm not sure how much you can make out on the tv but you smile and giggle at whatever you van make out, and I guess his voice. You don't knnow this yet but I got you a Tickel Me Elmo for Christmas. I hope you'll like it!

One of your favorite things to do is to look at yourself. I record videos of you dancing and you just love seeing yourself move on the computer screen. You smile and laugh at yourself.

You're also starting to notice Snoop a little. But I think you may be allergic to his kisses because he licked your face and it turned all red on that side for an hour or so.
Snoop and baby
Just as I predicted when you were in my womb, you're very strong. You try to use your legs to stand up and you've been doing that for about a month! You try to climb up the stomach of whoever is holding you. And when we lay you on your back but slightly propped, you stick out your arms and try to sit up using your little tummy muscles. You get mad when you can't move far.

When we flip you over for tummy time you kick your legs around and push yourself up. You like playing on your tummy for awhile. I can't wait until you start grabbing toys and things too. It seems like you're just starting to notice them, but don't know how to grab it yet.
tummy time
You also love bath time. You love feeling the water and you're sneaky sometimes and try to drink the water.

I think you're really going to like solid food. I'm excited to introduce it to you in a few months. You always look a my food when I eat and you slober a lot. I think you want to taste it.

When we went to the doctor you got your two month vaccines and it was so sad. I felt bad knowing something was about to hurt you, and having to sit there while you cried. You were so happy right before the nurse poked you. Watching you go from smiling to crying made me cry. But I nursed you right after and you were ok.

Before your shots we weighed and measured you and you were about 13.5lbs and 23.5in long. So you're 90th percentile for weight and 95th for height right now. It's so fun watching you grow but it's a little sad too. Sometimes I feel like I already want to get to work on getting you a brother or a sister, but then again I don't think we're quite ready for that yet.

I've had so much fun hanging out with you all day long during my maternity leave. We've had so much fun together. We traveled a lot the first couple of months but these last few weeks we've gotten to relax more and hang out around home.

We have a fun morning routine, you and I. When you start to wake up to eat around 7, so I bring you in bed with me and we go back to sleep until about 9. Then you want to eat again and you finally wake up for the day and are all smiley and happy.

I pump some milk for you and we sing songs and play patty cake. It's probably my favorite part of the day. Then we go downstairs and I let you play in your swing for a little bit while I make breakfast: Strawberry oatmeal and a cinnamon raisin bagel. Then I let you sit with me while I eat and we watch three or four episodes of Say Yes to the Dress on DVR.

I remind you that you don't need a $10,000 Pnina Tornai dress to be happy, and that you should wait a long long time to get married.

It's funny because I really started to get into the show during my labor with you. A Say Yes to the Dress marathon was on TV in the hospital so I watched that after my epidural and until it was time to push.

I've had so much fun spending my time off with you. It's been way more fun than I imagined and it's hard picturing not being with you all day. But I have to remember there's a season for everything and this time in your life it'll be daddy's turn to spend some time with you.
2 months
I suppose we'll get used to being apart for a little while. And you'll get to spend some quality time with Daddy for a while. Go easy on him. You and I have things figured out for us but it may take you guys a while to figure out what works for you two.

Being a mommy isn't boring or difficult like I used to worry it would be. It's really really fun.

Thanks for brightening up my world little one!

Love,

Mommy

Shopping Spree: The Best Way to Make Up for Shots

No one likes getting shots. Lord knows I didn't. Heck, I still don't. So when Lil' J had her first round last week I about lost it. Ok, actually I DID lose it. She freaked out too but had forgotten about it a couple minutes later. I on the other hand, couldn't get the memory out of my head. She was laughing and cooing one second, the next she was turning red and screaming her head off. And there I was holding her arms down. I felt like a jerk. I told myself I wouldn't, but I cried too.

I promised her I'd make up for it and I did. Right after the appointment with the mean nurse we went to Old Navy's baby sale and had a little shopping spree. We scored BIG!
old navy sale
Two jean skirts, a pair of pants, a sweater dress, two bohemian-style dresses, a pair of sparkly moccasins, a beautiful long sweater, and a jean jacket that she can wear with it all--All for $117!

At first I had put the pants back cause I thought the total was going to be closer to $200 but when the lady rang me up and the total only came to $107 I went back to get the adorable brown pants (and I think the FIRST pair of pants I've bought for her).

Everything I bought (minus the jacket) was on sale for $5-15!
old navy sale
Sadly, Lil' J slept through all the shopping, but she was happy to take part in a photoshoot when she was feeling herself again. I am so blessed to have this little angel in my life!
Old Navy sweater dress
She measured 95th percentile for height and 90th for weight so I got almost everything in 6-12 month size so she can wear it longer. The dresses I think she'll be able to wear as shirts even when she's older.
Old Navy pink bohem
If you ask me, she looks good in everything.
old navy skirt
Old Navy brown pants
What do you think? Like her fall wardrobe?

Oh, by the way, everyone who comments on this post before Sunday September 19th at 11:59pm is entered to win a $100 gift card to Old Navy. If you're a blog follower/subscriber (or become one) you get an extra entry. Also, go here to get a special coupon for 30-40% off. It's a fast one so good luck!

PS: I just took this video of her in her other bohemian dress. I just had to share! We had too much fun. The whole video coming for Wordless Wednesday!

*Thanks Old Navy, for sponsoring the shopping spree & giveaway*

Happy One Month!

My Little Angel,

When I realized you were a month old I couldn't believe it. In fact, when we were at your pediatrician appointment and someone asked how old you were I said two weeks. You've grown so fast!

I've gotten to know you a lot better over this month and I'm getting used to you being on the outside. At first it was a little sad for me, I missed the "other you," the Spawnie I knew for so long, and I felt like she was gone, but I gained you in return. Now it's sinking in more that you are one in the same.
pretty princess
You are smiling already, some people call it gas smiles but I call them smiles... Whatever, you seem to be looking at me, and it makes me happy so who cares if it's a little gas causing it sometimes? Coincidence? I think not.

You started out 9 pounds 9 ounces, then went down to 8 pounds 6 ounces, back up to 9 pounds 11 ounces at two weeks, and this week you were 10 pounds 11 ounces. It's nice to know my milk is keeping you nice and chunky. People always comment on your chubby cheeks or rolls. I think it's so cute. You're about 90th percentile for weight and 85th percentile for height right now.

When I first saw you, you looked so different than what I would have thought. I thought you'd look like me or your daddy but you don't really look like either. You daddy joked that it looked like we adopted you from Asia, and he called you little Buda, and our sumo wrestler. You're not as round anymore so he's usually calling you thinks like "stinker" "poopie" and stuff like that. I usually call you my pretty princess, or chunky monkey. I think you're starting to look a little more like a person but I still can't decide if you look like me or your daddy.

You're already sleeping great. You'll sleep for about 4-5 hours at night, wake up and eat for 10 minutes or so, then go back to sleep for another 2-3 hours. I'm figuring out your schedule and you're so alert when you're awake. You don't cry very often, only when you're hungry or sleepy, and if you're sleeping i just bounce you for 5-10 minutes and you're out like a light! You LOVE bouncing on my yoga ball, but that was getting inconvenient to go bounce on all the time, so bouncing on my arm has become satisfying to you.

I'm getting better at putting you down for naps alone versus holding and watching you the entire time, and I get more stuff done that way. It makes me more excited to hold you and see you again when you wake up, and I feel productive when I get a few small tasks done, or even take a nap myself.

You HATE your carseat, and it hurts me so much when you cry in it. But I have gotten to know better that if you have a full tummy before the ride you usually will do better. Sometimes you still scream your little head off, but I tell myself I know you're ok, you have a clean diaper and a full tummy, you are ok, and are safe in your seat. Sometimes you'll take a binky but it's sometimes hard for you to keep it in your mouth when you're upset.
blessing angel
We are quite the team, you and I--And your dad too. He gave you a beautiful blessing at church, I'll have to write more about that later. You have your daddy/daughter time at night now when he gives you a bath and gets you all ready for bed. It's really cute to watch. At first he didn't seem to know how to do anything with you but he's learned and gotten so much better so quickly.

You and Snoop are getting along so well. He's so calm around you, I think you'll be great friends growing up!
Snoop and Lil J
You love tummy time and I've already seen you roll from your tummy to your back twice! You kick your feet like crazy and you manage to scoot from one side of the bassinet to the other already! I think it's almost time to move you to your crib!

You and I are in for some adventures over the next month. We're traveling to New York City today, then Atlanta at the end of the month. You already visited Utah! I hope you'll love being around people like I do, and love traveling.

I'm loving getting to know you even more. I'm so glad you chose me to be your mommy. You're a wonderful gift from God.

Love,

Mommy

The Boob Shark

It happens fast.
Eyes shut

Nose wiggling, sniffing sniffing
Fishing for food.
Breath gasping
Snout snorting
Head bobbling
Mouth open, shut, open, shut
All the senses on the hunt-- For my boob.

When she finds it she attacks.
The gasping stops
and turns to gulps
She settles.
She's happy--Content.
The boob shark found her meal.

If I'm lucky, when she's full--
She'll either be milk drunk
or give me this look:

Motherhood With a Side of Paranoia

I took nap with my daughter the other day and when we awoke I noticed she was cross-eyed. Actually it was more like reverse-cross-eyed. One of her eyes was looking at me and the other was drifting off to the left. I immediately wondered if my sleeping with her could have caused this new development.--Caused her to go blind.

I yelled to my husband to have him come look and I held back the tears I could feel forming.

"She always looks like that," he told me.
"She always looks cross-eyed?" I didn't believe it. Anyways, I had stared at her 1000Xs more than he had. I would have noticed.
"She's just tired, she just woke up," he tried to console me, and hide a chuckle.
"What if she's going blind?" My paranoia wouldn't let down.

He snapped his fingers in his direction and she looked over at him. I was satisfied but only later thought of the fact that she could have been reacting to the sound of him snapping and not his fingers moving.

I fed her, and kept watching her eyes and noticed when she was looking normal again. Then I realized this is going to be a long hard journey.

I'm a hypochondriac. I've pretty much always self-diagnoised myself with all sorts of sicknesses and diseases. I claim I have mono when I'm actually just sleepy. I'm convinced I have a heart disease because I watched a special about Marfans on the Health Channel and so many of the symptoms explain my issues. I thought I had cancer when I discovered a lump in my breast (I actually did have to have it surgically removed. Luckily it was benign, but you can imagine my fear when they said it wasn't a cyst).

Now, unfortunately my delusions have carried over with my child. I can't read anything about babies and illness without worrying about Lil' J.

I pray every night that she'll be alive when I wake up and often jump up startled in the middle of the night when I realize I haven't heard her stir in awhile. I googled "green poop" when I saw a diaper full of it this morning. I hate that I'm acting this way but truthfully, I've done this with my dog--So it's only expected that with my own child it's magnified by a thousand.

Some friends told me about baby motion monitors and I'm thinking of getting one. This may put me in the category of "cuckoo" but I think it'll also give me a little piece of mind, and maybe help me sleep a little better.

I've heard a lot of good things about the Angel Care monitor but I'm thinking of getting a Snuza since it's more easily portable and has a vibration that will ring on baby if se doesn't breath or move for 15 seconds. The alarm sounds 5 seconds later if still nothing.

It's not about vanity, it's about my sanity. I'm not sure if I'll ever be sane again--Now that I'm a mom, but at least I can admit I need help.

CNS Stores sells bedroom vanity items, and nursery amenities including a few motion baby monitors and I'm hoping to buy one soon!- Sponsored.

Wordless Wednesday: Wardrobe Change

Better late than never!
"Mom, I told you I wanted to wear the pink dress! Maybe next time you'll listen to me!"
